Why Brisbane Is Becoming Increasingly Popular For US Airlines

There is nothing unusual about Brisbane Airport attracting US carriers, apart from the stunning success of the government support package.
While the COVID pandemic affected aviation globally, the severity of its impact was not equally shared around the globe or the airline industry. Nations with large domestic markets and no internal borders managed to make it through okay, but where both domestic and international air traffic ground to a halt, the results were devastating.

An industry in tatters needed help
That was particularly so in countries that adopted a zero-tolerance approach to the pandemic and endured extended lockdowns, such as New Zealand, Australia, China and other North Asian nations. With airports sitting idle, runways clogged with parked aircraft and thousands of workers unemployed, it is no wonder that governments in most regions wanted to get the industry moving again as soon as border restrictions were eased.

Police service, health department bungled vaccine mandates, judge finds

COVID-19 vaccine mandates for Queensland police and ambulance service workers were made unlawfully, the state’s Supreme Court has found.

The court on Tuesday delivered its judgments in three lawsuits brought by 86 parties against Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service for their directions to workers issued in 2021 and 2022.The judgments did not make a ruling or attempt to make a decision about the transmissibility of a particular variant of COVID-19 or the efficacy of a particular vaccine.

The prior directions required emergency service workers to receive COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots or face potential disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. The court found Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll failed to give proper consideration to human rights relevant to the decision to issue the vaccine mandate.

MAMMOTH CLEAN-UP AWAITS QUEENSLAND RESIDENTS AFTER DOWNPOUR INUNDATES COMMUNITIES

Queensland residents face a mammoth clean-up after a downpour inundated homes and businesses in the state’s south-east this week. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) assistant commissioner John Cawcutt said between 250mm to 300mm of rain fell across a broad area on Tuesday, including the north Brisbane and Moreton Bay Regional Council areas.
Firefighters responded to 30 emergency calls, while the State Emergency Service (SES) received more than 100 requests for assistance. While the rain has cleared, houses in communities such as Beachmere are still surrounded by water. Residents such as Jelica Antic-Pavlovic and Aaron Sweeny know how to prepare for flooding, but said the situation does not get easier. “It’s not a good feeling, we had a couple of times flooding on our properties,” Antic-Pavlovic said.

LEHRMANN INQUIRY HEAD MADE 55 CALLS TO THE AUSTRALIAN DURING PROBE, COURT HEARS

A lawyer for former top ACT prosecutor Shane Drumgold says the head of a high-profile inquiry into the handling of Bruce Lehrmann’s rape trial spent more than seven hours on the phone to The Australian newspaper over 55 phone calls during the probe. Dan O’Gorman, SC, who wants to overturn findings made against his client in the inquiry, told the ACT Supreme Court that phone records demonstrated former Queensland Supreme Court judge Walter Sofronoff had an apprehended bias against Drumgold due to the level of contact he had with The Australian’s Janet Albrechtsen in particular. “In the months leading up to and during the inquiry, Ms Albrechtsen was writing numerous articles critical of Mr Drumgold. Mr Sofronoff is then appointed,” O’Gorman said on Wednesday morning.
